Pregnancy Guide for Moms and Dads

By Luz Velez

Sleep whenever you get a chance to during your pregnancy. Difficulty sleeping is one of the biggest complaints women have while pregnant. As our bodies go through these massive changes, the ease of being able to get a full night's sleep decreases. Take naps when the opportunity presents itself.

Sleep as much as you want while you are pregnant. Sleep is in short supply for the parents of newborns. Also, while pregnant, your baby is eating up much of your available energy. Don't be afraid to sleep in, go to bed early, or nap when you want to. You won't be able to later!

For pregnant women in their third trimester, try to sleep on your left side. Sleeping this way gives your fetus the best blood supply and also allows blood to easily flow to your kidneys and uterus. Try to avoid sleeping on your back, it is the worst position for blood flow.

Yoga is a great way to prepare for childbirth. This form of exercise helps with morning sickness and eases discomfort caused by back pain. The stretches used in yoga help cultivate the muscles used for birthing. Most pregnant woman find that they have less aches and pains and more energy while practicing yoga during pregnancy.

Learn how to track your cycles if you are trying to conceive. Learning your cycles will help you find out the optimum times for trying to become pregnant. It will also help you pinpoint when you would have become pregnant so you can have a more accurate due date.

When riding in a car that has air bags, have the seat pushed back as far as possible from the dashboard. The closer you are to the dash, the closer you are to the airbags. Airbags can be dangerous to an unborn baby, though turning them off is more dangerous to you, so simply sit further away to balance these risks.

Before you are pregnant, it is a good idea to visit your dentist. Many times during pregnancy, your gums can be very sensitive, and a dental cleaning can be bothersome. You also will not be able to get any x-rays during your pregnancy, so it's best to get that out of the way before hand.

Avoid alcohol when trying to conceive or if you are already pregnant. Alcohol can cause you and your baby to have serious health problems. When trying to conceive, alcohol decreases sperm count and makes getting pregnant more difficult. Even drinks like wine are unhealthy for pregnant women or those trying to conceive.

To combat an upset stomach during the first trimester, try eating lots of small meals. Keeping your stomach with something in it will help keep those upset stomach issues at bay. Try to keep the foods you do eat light and fresh. Fresh fruit, vegetables and lean meats do wonders.
